Description Family Bromeliaceae Originating from S. America An outstanding non-succulent spiky plant with purple/black, fearsomely white spined leaves. This hybrid Dykia produces pups freely (producing offshoot plantlets), making a dense mound of starfish-like rosettes, and eventually a spreading mound-shaped colony. 30cm tall spikes of orange tubular flowers are produced in hot summers. Tolerant of -5 or a little lower for short periods. Must be planted in full sun, in very free draining soil and given plenty of winter protection, or grown in pots and moved into a frost free conservatory or onto window sill for winter. Height and spread after 4 – 5 years 15cm x 25cm.
